In 2020, Dr Disrespect, a.k.a. Guy Beahm, was abruptly banned from Twitch, where he had amassed over four million followers. Neither Twitch nor Beahm initially revealed the reason for the ban, leading to widespread speculation. The streamer later moved to YouTube, where he continued growing his following, now reaching 4.7 million subscribers.

Explosive Allegations Surface

The situation took a dramatic turn on June 22, 2024, when Cody Conners, a former Account Director of Strategic Partnership at Twitch, tweeted:

Midnight Society Severs Ties

Following these allegations, Midnight Society, a game studio co-founded by Beahm, announced on June 24, 2024, that it was severing ties with him. The studio stated:

On Friday evening we became aware of an allegation against one of our co-founders, Guy Beahm aka Dr Disrespect. We assumed his innocence and began speaking with parties involved. And in order to maintain our principles and standards as a studio and individuals, we needed to act. For this reason, we are terminating our relationship with Guy Beahm immediately.

Additionally, Turtle Beach, the gaming peripheral manufacturer, also announced it had severed ties with Beahm.

Beahm’s Admission

On June 25, 2024, Beahm issued a detailed statement on X (formerly Twitter), admitting to inappropriate messages with a minor in 2017 but denying any criminal intentions:

Were there Twitch Whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual.

Beahm also took moral responsibility for his actions:

Now, from a moral standpoint I’ll absolutely take responsibility. I should have never entertained these conversations to begin with.

Community Reactions

Many prominent streamers who have streamed with Dr Disrespect over the past few years, such as TimTheTatman and Nickmercs, have made statements on Twitter.

Just to be blunt and straightforward, that’s inexcusable, that’s unacceptable. There’s no excuse for something like that[…] I can’t support it. I can’t defend it. The boys and I are torn up over it too because we played a lot of games with the guy.

Ludwig and MoistCr1TiKaL have both made commentary videos discussing the situation in depth.

Despite many partners dropping him, Beahm said he won’t be going anywhere and plans to carry on streaming:

I’m not the same guy that made this mistake all those years ago. I’m taking an extended vacation with my family as mentioned on stream and I’m coming back with a heavy weight off my shoulders.

Twitch has yet to make a statement.
